Thank you for your interest in the Saskatoon Household Travel Survey. The survey administration period is now complete.

General Information

The 2023 Saskatoon Household Travel Survey is a voluntary household travel survey that collects information about daily travel. Survey participants are asked about each member of their household's (over the age of 5) travel on the previous weekday. Post-secondary students living in residence or in a roommate situation only answer for themselves, not the household.

The City of Saskatoon is conducting this survey to understand how, where, and why residents travel within Saskatoon. The information collected will be used to support planning for transportation infrastructure and services.

Yes. The City of Saskatoon is undertaking this initiative to learn more about how residents get around the City. The City of Saskatoon mailed letters to randomly selected households inviting them to participate in the survey either by telephone, or online.

To survey specific sub-groups, the City has handed out post cards on board Saskatoon Transit, randomly selecting transit users to participate in the survey. The City has also invited a random selection of University of Saskatchewan students to participate in the survey.

If you wish to validate the authenticity of this survey you may contact the City of Saskatoon at 306-975-2476 or visit the City's page.

Canada-based research firm R. A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. will conduct the survey on behalf of the City of Saskatoon.

The 2023 Saskatoon Household Travel Survey will occur from September to November 2023. Keep an eye out for an invitation to see if you have been selected to take part in this important survey!

About Participating

Participation in the survey is voluntary.

While voluntary, your participation is crucial. The few minutes you take to participate will have a big impact by representing the travel choices and travel patterns for residents in your area.

The first two sections of the survey contain questions about your household and the people living in your household. The final section asks questions about the trips taken by each member of your household that is 5 years of age or older on a particular weekday (your Travel Day). Post-secondary students living in residence or in a roommate situation only have to answer for themselves, not the household.

Types of questions are listed here.

Yes, residents who do not travel are just as important as those that do. Your survey answers will help build a snapshot of the travel patterns of the population as a whole, including people who did not travel on the day for which travel information is being provided. Your participation will ensure the survey reflects the make-up of the general population.

The information on travel patterns will help planners better understand residents' current transportation choices and trip purposes. Your responses will be combined with other responses in your area and the results will be used to help plan transportation infrastructure and services to better accommodate residents' needs.

We will be surveying randomly selected households across the City of Saskatoon. We will also be inviting a random sample of transit users to complete the survey. University of Saskatchewan students living in residence and off-campus will also be randomly selected to participate in this survey. Only a limited number of invitations are sent out, so your participation is very important.
