Traffic on the highway.

About:

Help us help you! As the population in Saskatoon grows, coordinated planning around future transportation needs is critical.

Whether you walk, cycle, bus, or drive, we need to hear from you! Your participation is essential to improving our roads, pathways, transit, and bike paths.

Thank you for your interest in the Saskatoon Household Travel Survey. The survey administration period is now complete.

The 2023 Saskatoon Household Travel Survey is a confidential and voluntary travel survey on how residents of the City of Saskatoon get from place to place on a daily basis.

This important survey is an initiative of the City of Saskatoon. The survey was last conducted in 2013, and is being conducted again in the Fall of 2023. The information you provide will help your city make data-based decisions on improvements to transportation infrastructure and services. Your survey results will be used to:

  • Shape Saskatoon's transportation policy;
  • Guide Saskatoon Transit operations;
  • Identify travel trends; and,
  • Inform future decisions about transportation systems and services.

An independent Canadian research firm, R.A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. has been contracted to administer the survey.

Your participation is important!

If you received a letter or a phone call from the City of Saskatoon, you have been randomly selected to participate in the study and have the chance to shape your City's transportation future! Please use the access code on your survey invitation letter to log in and complete your survey.

If you have received a post card while on board a Saskatoon Transit bus, you have been randomly selected to participate in the study. Please use the access code at the top of your post card to log in and complete your survey.

If you have received an email invitation from the University of Saskatchewan, you have been randomly selected to participate in the study. Please follow the link in your email to complete the survey online.

Please note that if you have been randomly selected through more than one of these three methods, you are only asked to participate once.

Why should I participate?

The goal of the survey is to understand where people are going and how they get there by collecting information on the trips made by each member of your household. The information you provide will be used to make informed transportation decisions on future planning and investment for roads, public transit, and other transportation facilities to make it easier to get where you need to go.

It is important that we gather information from residents from all walks of life who use any mode of transportation - including drivers, public transit users, cyclists, and pedestrians - regardless of how many trips they took. It is equally important that we hear from residents who might not have made any trips that day, as this data is essential to understanding travel patterns, especially in light of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on transportation.

Starting in September 2023, survey invitation letters (including details about the survey) will be sent to randomly selected households. Post cards will be handed out on board buses to randomly selected transit users. Emails will also be sent to University of Saskatchewan students who have been randomly selected to participate in the survey. Please note that if you have been randomly selected through more than one of these three methods, you are only asked to participate once.

Participants can choose to complete the survey online or by phone. The survey will take approximately 10-20 minutes depending on the size of your household and number of trips. Post-secondary students living in residence or in a roommate situation only answer for themselves, not the household. It is extremely important all your data is entered completely and accurately.

How do I participate?
